P.E.I. harness racing is experiencing a barn-based baby boom, with dozens of foals born at Island racetracks throughout the summer and fall. The surge in foal births is bringing renewed energy and enthusiasm to the sport, which has seen a decline in recent years.

The Island’s harness racing industry is estimated to be worth over $7 million annually, but it has been facing a number of challenges in recent years, including a drop in attendance and a decrease in the number of horses in training.

However, the recent influx of foals has been a boon to the industry, and has helped to generate a renewed sense of optimism among horse owners, trainers, and drivers.

“It’s great to see so many babies being born,” said Robert MacPherson, a trainer at Charlottetown Driving Park. “It’s a sign that the industry is growing and that we’re all working together to bring it back to its former glory.”

The baby boom is the result of a number of factors, including a growing number of mares being bred, as well as more successful stallions and mares in the breeding pool.

“The breeding program has been a success, and it’s resulted in an increase in the number of foals born, which is great news for the industry,” said MacPherson.

The new foals will eventually become the stars of the racetrack, and the influx of new blood is helping to create a new generation of harness racers.

“It’s exciting to see all of these new foals being born, as they will be the future of the industry,” said driver Wayne MacKinnon. “We’re looking forward to seeing them grow up and become the stars of the track.”

As the foals grow and develop, the industry is hopeful that the baby boom will help to revitalize the sport and bring more people back to the races.

“Harness racing has been a part of the Island for generations, and we’re optimistic that this baby boom will be the spark that brings the industry back to life,” said MacPherson. “It’s a great time for the sport, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
