Auction house RM Sothebys is auctioning the Ferrari 288 GTO Evoluzione in an online auction from 19 to 21 October. At Sotheby’s Closed Auctions, bidders can see where they are and their bids, but not how high bids from other bidders are.
And expect the money on offer to be amazing. After all, the 288 GTO Evoluzione is one of the rare examples from the Maranello brand. As the name suggests, the Evoluzione is based on the 288 GTO that was introduced in 1984. In fact, at the beginning of the 1980s, Ferrari thought of shaking up the World Rally Championship and the rules used were those of Group B. After the modification of the 308 it was not possible because of the rules , a brand new car was built and that. it was a 288 GTO.
The regulations stated that at least 200 copies of the respective road car had to be submitted. In fact, in the case of the 288 GTO, there were 272 (the last of which went to Niki Lauda, ware for another year, another story.
To push further development, work began on evolutionary models, which were intended in small numbers to be used in circuit racing. Even before Ferrari entered the World Rally Championship with the 288 GTO, the regulations were changed after several fatal accidents involving the powerful Group B cars. Ferrari built five versions of the 288 Evoluzione. And instead of further development of the rally car, the Evo served as a test laboratory for the upcoming F40 supercar and was in some ways a link between Ferrari’s high flyers of the 80s, the 288 GTO and the F40.
