New Vettel: Schumacher’s progress is not visible because of a bad car

Mick Schumacher currently drives for Haas, but the German still does not have a contract for next year. His contract with Ferrari’s Driving Academy also reportedly expires in December. His compatriot and mentor Sebastian Vettel stands up for him.

Vettel spoke at the press day at Circuit Zandvoort with GPFans, among others, about Schumacher’s future. The Aston Martin driver, who will retire after this season, hopes Schumacher can secure a seat before 2023.

There is no time to improve

“I would be surprised if [Schumacher] he can’t get a seat,” said the four-time world champion. “I don’t know about the latest developments, but I think he definitely deserves a seat and that he’s better than people think. These days you don’t get more time to improve yourself. He made great progress last year that many people didn’t see because the car was so bad. He had a bad start this season. You will soon be accused. He overcame that and ran a strong race.”

Giovinazzi

Antonio Giovinazzi appears to be the frontrunner to replace Schumacher at Haas if he does not get a contract extension. The Italian will take part in free practice sessions for the US team at its home race in Monza and at the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. Daniel Ricciardo’s name is also floating around the paddock. Schumacher is one of the contenders to be Esteban Ocon’s teammate at Alpine. However, the French team seems to be more interested in Pierre Gasly, while the Oscar Piastri fiasco is still unresolved.
